      ERATOSTHENES' EXPERIMENT

      On Friday, September 22nd, 2023, during the autumnal equinox, between 11am and 2pm, our students in 1ère replicated Eratosthenes’ historic experiment in the school courtyard. Each group was equipped with a plumb-bob, and by measuring the minimum shadow cast by their “gnomon”, they were able to estimate the earth’s circumference and deduce its radius. In this way, they took part in a collaborative experiment carried out by around twenty other AEFE schools.
