POSTCARDS FROM HAMBURG
Postcards from our 7th grade German students on a language trip in Hamburg.
We were lucky to experience a beautiful sunny day on our first adventure. The trip down to Hamburg was fast. We explored the whole city and saw many important places, including the town hall, the harbor, the canals, and St. Nikolai memorial – in the meantime the students solved the exercises we had prepared for them.

After breakfast overlooking the harbor (a great view from our hostel!) we went to the Kunsthalle to see the famous painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich, from the beginning of European Romanticism. The students were moved by some of the other works they saw. They did some creative writing, which we will expand upon when we get back to school.
Another day of sunscreen. We had lunch in the sun by the water before taking a steamboat in the beautiful area of Alster and the city lakes. In the “Planten un Blomen” park, which we visited afterwards, the students tried their hand at some short, improvised performances in German and French. We ended the day with a nice meal at a traditional restaurant where the students tasted German specialties and enjoyed the atmosphere of the Sternschanze district.

50,000 steps – the conclusion of our long walks – where we saw the city from every angle, ships from throughout history, learned new words, and discovered water and more water, but also deeper friendships and happy memories: Here are some photos from our latest adventure in Hamburg. The students did a great job: they were engaged throughout the trip and helped ensure the trip was both academic and fun, creative and exciting. They can be proud of themselves.
